Radcliffe Square

Poem by John Elinger

Radcliffe CameraSir Thomas Bodleyes library to the north
confronts the University’s great Church
across the cobbled square, while to the west
and east lie Brasenose College and (research –
committed) All Souls; but the craziest
building’s the Camera, behind its skirt
of grass and railings, trying to convert
squares into circles – store books on a curve!
Pause here, where line and shape work to preserve
the past in tone, before you venture forth.
