Sugar: The Bitter Truth

There is a wave of thought bought out by new research to suggest that our western diet of low fat, wholegrain, 5 fruit a day, is not good for us. What has happened is that we have ended up with a high carbohydrate diet and many are putting down these sugars and starches to the cause of Obesity in the US. One, which can be described as a pandemic. We in the UK are following suit and Europe is not far behind. But this problem is also worldwide.

I don’t want anyone to think that I am ‘fatist’, far from it as I consider myself as overweight. I’d say I’m some 10 to 15kgs (33lbs or 2st 8lbs) over weight. Put another way that’s about a 1/5th of my whole weight! But fat is not the main issue here because it is what health problems our low fat, wholegrain, 5 a day fruit diet is giving us – diabetes; heart disease; Type 3 diabetes, to name but a few.

One of the many who are steering us back to a high-fat diet is Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California. Before this he worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN where he was in charge of the endocrine (relating to or denoting glands which secrete hormones or other products directly into the blood) care of many children whose hypothalamie (a region of the forebrain whose function amongst other things includes hunger) had been damaged.

What he observed was many patients who survived became massively obese.

 Since then Dr. Lustig has authored 85 peer-reviewed articles and 30 reviews, making him an authority on obesity relating to his field in pediatrics.

He talks about how sugar (sucrose) and fructose (fruit sugar) is the same because sucrose is half sucrose and half fructose. In other words half of what sugar you consume because its fructose ends up being metabolized by your liver as only the liver can deal with fructose. But as a result of our gorging ourselves on too much fructose from drinks and foods we are now getting liver disease. Dr. Lustig explains this so eloquently in his lecture.

To be honest most of it went over my head, but his main message gets through. We are being poisoned by manufacturers producing more and more sugary things for us to consume and they use it because sugar is addictive. Fruit drinks are a big problem as is High Fructose Corn Syrup. the latter is cheap to produce and loved by the food industry which they have been increasingly putting in our foods.

What else does Dr. Lustig tell us in this video? Well he is very damming of Coca Cola and also America’s food regulators. He is at times very funny but extremely interesting.
